Launching Skills4Reuse

New Teaching Material on Reuse of Building Materials Launched for Nordic Vocational Schools

Publiceret 07-03-2024

With the ambition to enhance sustainability and environmental awareness in Nordic vocational schools, we are unveiling a new, specially designed teaching material called 'Skills4Reuse.' This material focuses on the use of recycled building materials, tailored for vocational schools across the Nordic region.

Digital Learning Platform

The teaching material, Skills4Reuse, targets students and apprentices in both introductory and advanced courses in bricklaying and carpentry at vocational schools in the Nordic region. The material can be used as stand-alone teaching activities or as three extended, tailored modules.

Throughout the course, students will be introduced to various themes such as sustainability in the construction industry, reuse potential, legislation, and structural design. Skills4Reuse is accessible digitally and includes videos, class discussions, facts, quizzes, and practical exercises, allowing students to learn how to dismantle and build with recycled building materials.

The material is developed by the Danish Craft and Sustainability Knowledge Center (Videnscenter for Håndværk & bæredygtighed), and Norion Consult as part of the Nordic Sustainable Construction collaborative program. The teaching material aims to equip future craftsmen with key skills in sustainable practices and reuse.

Key Competences in Reuse

The Skills4Reuse project addresses the growing demand for skills in the green transition of the construction and infrastructure sectors in the Nordic region. The project's goal is to equip the upcoming generations of craftsmen with key competences in sustainable practices and reuse.

Helle Redder Momsen, Secretary-General at Nordic Sustainable Construction, expresses pride in launching the new material: "The new teaching material will be a valuable resource for vocational schools throughout the Nordic region. By integrating sustainability and the reuse of building materials into educational programs, we hope to contribute to a generation of professionals committed to and equipped for creating a more sustainable future for the construction industry."

Jakob Sonny Jakobsen from the Craft and Sustainability Knowledge Center, involved in developing the material, looks forward to its release: "Reuse is a crucial part of transitioning to more climate- and environmentally friendly construction sector. With Skills4Reuse, fundamental knowledge about reuse is delivered in a teaching package that is easy for vocational teachers to use. Simultaneously, we have focused on making the material practical, so both teachers and apprentices can easily acquire skills for incorporating reuse into everyday construction site activities.

Core Elements of the New Teaching Material:

  • Teaching material in five Nordic languages and English, featuring engaging and innovative teaching activities and fundamental information on sustainability in construction.
  • Applicable at all levels of education.
  • Separate teaching modules on the introduction to sustainability in construction, reuse of wood, and reuse of bricks. Together, the modules constitute 42 independent teaching elements that can be used in coherent courses or individually.
  • Teacher guides that are easy to follow, providing guidance through each teaching element.
  • A help desk that quickly assists the teacher with any uncertainties or questions about the material.
  • Easily accessible digital content with online tasks and a download function for materials.
