What is it about?
Today, only about 12% of the materials used in the EU come from recycled sources. The Act aims to double that by 2030 by making it easier and more attractive to use secondary raw materials.
What could it include?
- Common EU rules on when waste stops being waste (end-of-waste criteria)
- Harmonised waste definitions and simpler cross-border waste shipments
- Measures to boost demand for recycled materials, e.g. in public procurement
- A revision of the rules for electronic waste
Why does it matter for construction?
Construction and demolition waste is one of the EU's largest waste streams. New rules on end-of-waste and recycles content could affect when demolition materials can be reused and what requirements apply to construction products. This ties in closely with the Construction Products Regulation and Digital Product Passports.
