The affordable housing debate has gained new momentum since the European Commission adopted its Affordable Housing Plan on 16 December 2025. - Next act proposal is the Affordable Housing Act. It is expected on 9 September 2026 and set is to target short-term rentals and housing-stressed areas.
- The Housing Simplification Package is expected as a proposal during Q2 2027, and maps EU rules affecting housing supply with a focus on cutting administrative burdens and speeding up permitting processes. Call for evidence is open until 30. September 2026.
Together, these are the two initiatives most likely to affect national building regulation directly.
