On 19 June 2026, the European Housing Alliance held its first meeting, the European Commission's new cooperation platform for tackling the housing crisis across Europe. The meeting is relevant to the EU Work Package of Nordic Sustainable Construction, as the Alliance may come to play an important role in how housing issues are addressed at EU level going forward. Boverket (SE) took part in the meeting as part of the Work Package in the Nordic Sustainable Construction programme, trying to follow the EU regulation in early stage.
Purpose of the first meeting
The Housing Alliance was launched by the EU Commission in May 2026 as part of the European Affordable Housing Plan. The meeting on 19 June, titled "From Principles to Practice", was designed to jointly define how the Alliance should cooperate, rather than presenting a finished concept from the top down.
Participants ranging from Member States and regions to cities and civil society organisations discussed:
- Who should take part in the Alliance, and how participation can be broadened both geographically and across different types of actors.
- Which topics should be prioritised, with social and subsidised housing as well as renovation of existing buildings already enjoying strong support, while new themes such as housing speculation and financing models were also raised.
- How the Alliance should work in practice — with an emphasis on moving from discussion to genuine co-creation and real policy impact.
