Panel Debate at COP31

Unlocking the Value of Existing Buildings: A Strategic Resource for the Green Transition

10november

Join us at a panel debate, designed for policymakers, public authorities, industry leaders, cities, investors and researchers at COP31. The key question will be: “How can we unlock the full value of existing buildings while balancing climate ambitions, housing needs, economic viability and quality of life?”

Across the Nordic region and Europe, governments are confronted with multiple challenges at the same time: increasing housing demand, climate targets, resource scarcity, demographic changes and pressure on public finances. Growing attention is now being directed towards how existing buildings can become a larger part of the solution.

To improve our common knowledge foundation on how to make better use of what we have, the Nordic countries have created an inspiration catalogue, which identifies five strategic action areas::

  1. Mapping the Existing Building Stock
  2. Prioritising Maintenance and Efficient Use
  3. Driving Renovation Instead of Demolition
  4. Enabling Changed Use Efficiently
  5. Renovation for the Future

To concretise the action areas, policy measures and cases that support each of the action areas are exemplified in the catalogue. In total it contains 34 specific ways to make a more efficient use of the existing building stock. The catalogue argues that existing buildings should be regarded as assets whose value can be maximised over time.

Panelists with new contributions

The panelists have been chosen as they can build on the catalogue and provide in-depth insight to the potential solutions and perspectives on how existing buildings can simultaneously be viewed as a climate resource, a housing reserve, a cultural asset and an investment opportunity.
