After a tendering process in the spring of 2026, a contract has been signed between The Housing, Construction, and Planning Authority of Iceland and VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) about work on two sub-tasks of the Climate Work Package related to efficient LCA processes and Building Information Modeling. According to the contract, VTT will conduct work which covers sub-tasks 1.3 Streamlined BIM integration and 1.5 Simplification of LCA processes in the Climate Work Package. Final deliverables will be submitted by VTT in spring 2027.
Focus areas
The focus of the work will be on improving the efficiency and practicality of BIM-based LCA processes, with a particular emphasis on solutions that can support authorities. This includes mapping recent digital developments that streamline LCA workflows after submission, such as validation systems, data templates, and LCA data management architectures, and assessing how these contribute to increased efficiency. Based on this, the project will develop concrete guidelines to help authorities prioritise scalable and realistic measures to improve LCA processes, supported by Nordic examples.
The work will also include an in-depth analysis of existing and emerging LCA validation systems in the Nordic countries, identifying core functionalities, appropriate levels of verification, and the balance between automated checks and expert judgement, with the aim of proposing a Nordic-compatible validation framework aligned with EU developments. Where feasible, selected additional activities may also be carried out, including comparative insights into BIM–LCA workflows and current practices across the region.

Representatives from the VTT team working on this project will be present at the Nordic Climate Forum for Construction on the 30th of September 2026 in Reykjavík, where they will give a presentation about the work in progress.
