Latest Updates on the Work Happening Within the Nordic Sustainable Construction Programme

The work package leaders, the secretariat and the Nordic Council of Ministers met up online, for their 3rd meeting this year, to share updates and insights on the findings and work in the work packages. Each work package updated each other on what is currently being worked on and which results have been obtained so far.

The programme meets up 4 times every year, twice in-person and two meetings online, to discuss, update and share insights on the work carried out within each of the work packages. This time work package leaders and the secretariat met online. Key highlights and work being carried out within each work package is highlighted here.

EU Work Package

The EU Work Package has made a timeline with an overview of the EU initiatives connected to the Affordable Housing Plan, including the Affordable Housing Act, the Housing Simplification Package, the Construction Service Act and the EU Housing Summit taking place in November. Additionally, the work package participated in the European Housing Alliance to stay updated and informed on how the housing issues are addressed at EU level going forward. Read more on the first meeting that was held here.

The work package will be keeping a close eye and focus on the following EU initiatives in their future work:

Housing Simplification Package (expected KOM proposal 2027)

Climate Work Package

The climate work package has, following a tendering process, commissioned VTT to take care of the task of developing guidance for authorities on more efficient BIM-based LCA processes and analysing Nordic validation systems. Read more about the project here.

Additionally, the work package participated in the Whole-Life Carbon (WLC) Network in Brussels together with INIDCATE LIFE, European WLC Forum for Buildings and other key stakeholders from across Europe in June, giving insights into WLC methods across Europe. HMS, leading the Climate Work Package, is hosting the Nordic Climate Forum for Construction this year with focus on limit values and regulatory developments of LCA, digitalisation of LCA and climate adaptation. The Climate Work Package is expecting to use the output from the forum for their further work within the work package. See the full agenda of the forum here and sign up to join.

Circularity Work Package

The Circularity Work Package has recently shared the winner of the bid for working with reused construction materials to be a consortium led by SINTEF and consisting of research institutes and universities from Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, called RECON-NORDICS. The work will focus on reclaimed structural concrete products. Read more about the project here.

Additionally, Standard Norway won the tender to establish a Nordic network bringing together Eurocode experts, standardisation bodies and Nordic authorities to share knowledge and seek potential for harmonised national annexes along with identifying green benefits in the 2^nd generation of Eurocodes. Furthermore, a Nordic consortium has been set up to develop a common Nordic scientific framework for assessing existing structures and thereby supporting the implementation of the 2^nd generation of Eurocodes. Read more on the project here.
